How a new septic system gets built

Mound or trench?

A conventional system sends treated water from the tank into trenches in the ground. Where the soil is tight, bedrock is shallow or groundwater sits close to the surface, the system has to be built up above the ground instead. That is a mound, and it costs more.

Questions

How much does a new septic system cost in Minnesota?

Angi puts a conventional system in the Minneapolis area at $5,575 to $8,000. Mound and aerobic systems run $10,000 to $20,000. Your soil decides which one you need.

Do I need a permit for a new septic system?

Yes. Septic permits come from your county, or in some places your city or township. Your designer or installer usually handles it.

Who inspects a new septic system?

Your local government or a licensed inspector who does not work for you or the installer. State law requires a compliance inspection for every new or replacement system.

Why does my lot need a mound?

When the soil is too tight, bedrock is shallow or groundwater is close to the surface, there is not enough good soil to treat the water. A mound adds that soil above ground.
